sometimes it sucks to wake up
i was at a caribbean resort, on a beautiful sunny beach. there were loads of people everywhere. and i think my family was up on the beach somewhere. along the beach, there was a place where there is a small rocky inlet, about four or five feet wide and it came back from the edge of the water about 10 feet or so. we were sitting on this rocky edge with our feet in the water, looking down into the inlet, where you could see tons of urchins and starfish and shells. It was beautifully rocky- kind of dark, but all the sea life there was brightly colored. the person sitting next to me picked up a pink heart-shaped urchin (irregular - the kind with no spines) and turned it over. you could see it’s mouth working like a rotary bit. “cool!” i said, “let’s find something to feed it!” but they got freaked out and dropped it into the water. it sank all the way to the bottom of the crevasse, 15 feet or so. “aww, man... you dropped it!” said i, as i hopped into the cool water, took a deep breath, and dove down. as i swam downward i noticed windows along the back edge of the inlet. skinny windows that were long vertically and had wrought-iron patterns on them. there were three of them, one of the back wall of the rock on one on each side, and there was a warm glow coming from them. i scooped the urchin up off the sandy bottom and resurfaced. “there are windows down there!” and i took another gulp of air and headed back down to investigate. i peered into them up-side-down, and noticed they were windows into the resort gift shop. as i got out of the water i stated, “the windows are into the gift shop!”
the sun was setting now, but it was still warm and toasty, and as you looked out at the ocean, the resort was to the right. we began to walk along the beach towards the resort, and at one point the building came right up to the water's edge, and there was a huge pier overhead. as we walked underneath the water was up to my shins. here it was very rocky, whereas the other areas of the beach had been sandy. although i had no shoes on, i had no trouble walking at all. i walked with my head down because everywhere you looked there were amazing shells. and fish too! at one point i saw an enormous cardinal tetra, nearly two inches long, and exclaimed to catny (who was the one walking with me) “look at that huge tetra! he’s surrounded by small ones too! they’re just like the ones in my fish tank! isn’t it awesome to be in the caribbean?” then i heard a beep beep beep and the beach was gone....
