"is anybody alive out there?"
today is the 93rd year since the sinking of the titanic. (it doesn't seem right to call those sort of things anniversaries) so i spent some time online in the morning reading about it. as of last year there were 3 people still alive who had survived the sinking. One was 5! at the time and remembered the sounds of people drowning and the extreme silence that followed. I can't even imagine.... but i try. I think it's important to remember history and try to put yourself in someone else's shoes.
Which is why it bothered me i suppose that all day all i heard about in the news was the grand opening of a new mcdonalds to celebrate 50 years. Is that what is important history to us now? the anniversaries of fast-food chains? how american.... nevermind that april 15th is the birthday of Leonardo Da Vinci (1452) and that April 15th was the day Abraham Lincoln died in 1865, or that in 1945 it was the day the Bergen-Belson concentration camp (where Anne Frank died) was liberated in Germany.... it makes me sad to feel that our history is slowly passing into oblivion. and i don't just mean that time passes.... but more that people don't think it's important to remember. it makes me sad that the people who have stories to share will be gone before the 'next generation' realizes what they're losing....
